The Circuit saves 52 tons of CO2 emissions in only four months

In line with the Strategic Plan, the Catalan racetrack inaugurated last year the largest public self-consumption photovoltaic installation in Catalonia. The 1,239 solar panels installed already show evidence of significant energy savings.

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is carrying out an ambitious transformation plan of the facility in order to modernise it, make it even more sustainable and diversify its activity to generate new income sources. The aim is to bring the Circuit to excellence and turn it into the most modern facility in Europe, with the commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency and decarbonisation as the main focus of this transformation.

In this context, last October the Circuit inaugurated the largest public self-consumption photovoltaic installation in Catalonia. Since then, the Circuit has a total of 1,239 solar panels occupying 2,710 square metres and generating an energy volume of 0.88 GWh per year. The kWp volume is 615 (combined data of Main Grandstand, marquee and roofs). In total, the installation generates 33% of the energy currently consumed by the Circuit.

In little more than three months, the result of the commissioning of this large installation translates into a saving of 52.68 tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent to the planting of 72 trees.

But the Circuit goes further. The Rooftop, a facility that will be inaugurated this year and that will connect the Stadium area with the paddock area, will also be equipped with solar panels. This month saw the completion of the installation of additional panels in the paddock washroom building. All this will help to generate a higher volume of energy.

Josep Lluís Santamaría, General Manager of Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya: "These initiatives are one more step in the transformation of the facility, which we want to be the most sustainable one, becoming the benchmark circuit worldwide".
